I first became aware of the issue, the subject of this post, from Capsun’s Corner, Props and Slops: February 9-15 a couple of weeks ago. What am I referring to? HB 444relating to civil unions and currently making its way through our State Legislature. Today from Hawaii Blog, Okino: Homosexuality causes disease and Damon Tucker’s Weblog, The Civil Union Bill Tweet Feed from Derrick DePledge, I read comments made by the councilman in regards to this bill. It has attracted plenty of attention as you can further read here from KITV. The councilman in question is Gary H. Okino representing District 8 and here are some of his comments made today:
- Civil unions would give legal equivalence to the homosexual lifestyle
- I believe they’re misinterpreting the Bible
- Marriage is between a man and woman because the “parts fit.” Homosexuality, he says, causes disease
- civil unions would be a danger to the community
- homosexuals have these STDs, diseases, and AIDS because parts don’t fit
Mr. Okino I hope you get your head out of your ass behind or is it so far stuck up there you can’t? I have never in my life heard or read such ignorant statements. You are a disgrace to your district and for that matter to the people of the City and County of Honolulu and the State of Hawaii. Your statements would be like me saying that straight people cause cancer, or wars or 9/11. I can only hope people realize what a fool you are and elect some one to represent them in your district that has a sense of honor and decency for the human race. I don’t care what your opinion on the issue is, just present them with knowledgeable facts and not some myth you have floating in your small minded brain. Perhaps, Mr. Okino, you should follow the lead of Rep. Jon Riki Karamatsu.
Hey, it’s just my opinion.
A Hui Ho

I want to know why the government is regulating marriage anyway. Who will same sex marriages harm?
As for disease, married couples have a much lower instance of STDs than their single contemporaries. If a same sex couple is given the same legal rights and supports as hetero couples, then we might actually have less partner changing and slow the spread of STDs.

It’s an opinion I share, so am glad you shared it. A new blog was started just because of this issue, especially Councilman Gary Okino’s testimony: http://equalityhawaii.wordpress.com.
Capsun: Thank you. I just wish I had more readers to see what I said but it’s out there. Thanks for the web site. I have left comments already LOL. I’m calling Sam Sloan’s office and letting him know he has lost my vote for good because of this. Thanks again for your site and your comments
Thank you for a well-stated post. I am in complete agreement. If the content of Mr. Okino’s testimony wasn’t enough to discredit himself, the way in which he presented sure was. His blatant ignorance of the issues that surround the gay community made his comments especially damaging. I couldn’t believe he made that joke about parts not fitting. His immaturity astounds me.
I had a few thoughts about this even before Okino (my councilman, no less) erupted.
Equality Hawaii and Linkmeister. I’m so outraged at this whole thing I can’t believe it. I so hope that we can do something to oust that fool when he is up for re-election. I hope this just doesn’t die into archieves after the session is over.
